Working in immunology, you realize that everyone assumes you know the alphabet of lab abbreviations. From flow cytometry to viral transduction, these abbreviations are everywhere, but understanding them is crucial for experimental design, interpretation, and communication.
𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗯𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:
FMO – Fluorescence Minus One: control sample used in flow cytometry to set gates and determine background fluorescence [1].
MFI – Mean Fluorescence Intensity: quantifies the average signal intensity of a marker in a cell population [1].
MOI – Multiplicity of Infection: ratio of infectious agents (viruses, bacteria) to target cells during transduction or infection experiments [2].
CD – Cluster of Differentiation: markers used to identify cell types in immunology [3].
IFN – Interferon: cytokines that modulate immune responses.
HLA – Human Leukocyte Antigen: key for antigen presentation and T cell recognition.
Ab – Antibody: immunoglobulin recognizing a specific antigen.
Fab – Fragment antigen-binding: portion of antibody that binds antigen.
Fc – Fragment crystallizable: portion of antibody that interacts with immune cells.
EBV – Epstein-Barr Virus: virus associated with some lymphomas and autoimmune diseases.
MCV – Merkel Cell Polyomavirus: virus linked to Merkel cell carcinoma.
Ig – Immunoglobulin: general term for antibodies.
CFSE – Carboxyfluorescein Succinimidyl Ester: dye used to track cell proliferation.
CFU – Colony Forming Unit: measure of viable cells in microbiology.
IL – Interleukin: cytokines mediating immune cell communication.
TNF – Tumor Necrosis Factor: pro-inflammatory cytokine.
APC – Antigen presenting cell: type of immune cells that present fragments of antigen peptides to T cells.
ELISA – Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay: method for protein detection.
